The background the work came out of.
themilliways is the solo project of musician Ju Jin-tae, building experimental soundscapes out of ambient and post-rock. After years as a creative director at Seotaiji Company, where he oversaw the visual content for Seo Taiji’s 8th and 9th albums, he debuted in 2021 with the single 〈3rd air〉, followed by 〈Void〉, 〈Ian EP〉, and 〈Disappear〉 (2024).
themilliways (the milliways) is a solo project by musician Ju Jintae, pursuing emotional yet experimental soundscapes rooted in ambient and post-rock.
Musical Beginnings
Having begun composing in the early 2000s, he was drawn to music through the influence of raw, rough sounds from bands like Nirvana and Sonic Youth. With an interest in social movements and resistance culture, he also served as the inaugural secretary-general in the founding of 'Korea Information & Communication Workers' Union,' the first sector-based IT union in Korea.
Band Activity and Social Engagement
In 2007, he co-founded Munggu Band and debuted as guitarist at the Salsal Festival protesting the Saemangeum reclamation project. Until 2014, he conveyed messages of resistance through punk rock at various protest sites — labor movement rallies, anti-war peace marches, and occupation sites resisting large-scale gentrification (especially Hongdae's Duriban).
The Intersection of Media and Music
From 2005 to 2015, he worked as a content producer and creative director at Seo Taiji Company, continually experimenting at the intersection of music and media.
A New Beginning
Following a terminal lung cancer diagnosis in 2017, during the time of survival and recovery, he resolved to build his own musical world. As the start of a journey to rediscover his essence, on December 27, 2021, he released his first EP '3rd air' as the solo project themilliways, making his official debut.
Present
Since then, he has released 'Void,' 'Disappear,' 'Ian EP,' and more, continuing to expand his own musical world while steadily challenging experiments and crossovers that transcend genre boundaries.
